英文的固定用法裡有 "in the dead of night/winter" 的說法，中文的意思分別是午夜和隆冬，莎士比亞的The Twelfth Night 就曾出現過："And sing them loud even in the dead of night" (1.5)。"The dead of ..." 有某時最密實、濃烈的意思，而這首歌第一段歌詞所唱的"the dead of summer"，我想既有正逢炎夏之實，更有盛夏已死之指。何況緊接著唱的又是"but it feels cold out"：cold out是外頭很冷的口語表達，反過來的out cold則有不省人事的意思。整首歌打從一開始就透著一股死亡、空虛的氣息，隨著歌曲的進行，故事的輪廓也逐漸清晰。

英中對譯真的每每難到我昏頭，明明對我來說英文才是最接近母語等級的外語，只是兩個語言的語境和表達方式差這麼多，比起翻譯，我總覺得分別寫出兩篇獨立文章更簡單許多。曾與從事新聞工作的同學聊到這件事，她亦能深深同理，只要涉及轉換就會有能量與意涵上的耗損，發電原理是這樣，語言翻譯也是這樣。

儘管如此，我還總是抱著一股謎之熱情全然投入翻譯，不得不說是因為羨慕作者／作詞者的文采，想佔其功力為己有（）的唯一合法方式就是正確解讀並翻譯成屬於我自己的版本。不知道專業的筆譯者是否都有過渴望成為作家的念頭呢？我知道其中有些人早是某些領域的出色學者，也有些已是精於書寫、小有名氣的文字工作者。我暫且無法想像自己成為其一就是了。

Movements 的所有歌裡我最喜歡的一首就是 "Daylily"，還曾經為它剪了一部影片。巧合的是，每一次向他們靠近，都是經歷生離死別的前後。我當然沒有訴諸宇宙神秘力量的打算，只是覺得「氣息」或「磁場」這種事，或許並非毫無道理。他們的歌詞和曲調之於我，就像是將悲痛與絕望轉換為生命力而迸發的光亮，要你無論如何都不許自甘墮落。相較於嘶啞的悲鳴或怒吼，那更是一種不慍不火地接受眼前事實的淡淡哀傷，平息下來以後不是自暴自棄地擺爛或放蕩，而是儘管再痛苦都不輕言背叛自己或傷害他人的堅韌自持。好似那曾使我無聲流淚後真正振作起來的一句：「人在困惑的時候需要的不是方向，而是寬容。允許失敗的寬容。」

前些日子向朋友推薦這首歌，他也說我從以前喜歡的歌曲，就都是這樣飽含生命力的。

渴望向陽、渴望打起精神，卻別無選擇地身陷黑暗時，需要的真的只是一句小而真誠的關心，或是路過的人順手拉自己一把。因此，我想，我可能真的比誰都還要熱愛生命也說不定。因為熱愛生命所以看不慣有人擾亂他人生命的平和、因為熱愛生命而不捨自己曾遭到他人毫無來由的抹黑、利用和破壞、因為熱愛生命所以其實比誰都受不了看自己浪費時間、因為熱愛生命所以更必須沒有明天地活著。

我明白生活是地獄，那也得用力咬牙走過。起來吧，我陪你。Movements 如是唱著。
